COSTA DA MORTE CAMINO
From the Atlantic edge of Galicia to the heart of Santiago
Guided • 8 Days • 7 Nights • 119 Kilometers
Journey Overview
This carefully designed journey follows Portugal’s Atlantic coastline into Galicia before joining the beautiful Spiritual Variant to Santiago. Most stages are intended to be walked in full. Planned shuttle assistance is built into Days 2, 5, and 10 to preserve the most scenic and meaningful portions while keeping longer days manageable.
Throughout the journey, the support vehicle remains available for anyone who needs additional assistance or wishes to shorten a walking day.
-
Accommodation: Muxía
Distance: Leisurely local exploration
Meals: Dinner
Meet in Santiago de Compostela and travel together to Muxía, where the journey begins at the Atlantic. After check-in and a Camino orientation, visit the Santuario da Virxe da Barca and the wave-worn rocks at the edge of the sea. Gather for a welcome dinner and settle into the rhythm of the days ahead.
-
Accommodation: Lires
Distance: 9 miles / 14.5 km
Meals: Breakfast
A gentle first walking day carries us out of Muxía and into the rugged beauty of the Costa da Morte. Quiet lanes, forest paths and glimpses of the Atlantic lead toward Lires, a small rural village near one of Galicia’s loveliest estuaries. The comfortable distance leaves time to connect with the group and ease into Camino life.
-
Accommodation: Finisterre
Distance: 8.8 miles / 14.2 km
Optional lighthouse walk adds about 3.7 miles / 6 km
Meals: Breakfast
Continue south through rolling countryside, coastal villages and sweeping ocean views toward Finisterre—long believed to be the ‘End of the World.’ After reaching town, those who wish may continue to Cape Finisterre and its iconic lighthouse, where the land falls away into the Atlantic and the sunset invites reflection.
-
Accommodation: Corcubión or Cee
Distance: ~8.8 miles / 14.2 km
Meals: Breakfast
A shorter recovery stage turns us inland along the historic Camino. Leave Finisterre behind and follow a varied route of woodland, country lanes and coastal glimpses toward the neighboring towns of Corcubión and Cee. There is time to slow down, explore the waterfront and enjoy the region’s maritime character.
-
Accommodation: Olveiroa
Distance: ~12.9 miles / 20.7 km
Meals: Breakfast
Climb away from the coast and into rural Galicia, passing stone villages, farmland and open countryside. Near Hospital, the routes to Muxía and Finisterre meet, and from there the path continues to Olveiroa—a beautifully preserved village known for its traditional stone houses and distinctive hórreos.
-
Accommodation: Santa Mariña area
Distance: ~8.5 miles / 13.6 km
Meals: Breakfast
This intentionally shorter stage divides one of the Camino’s longest traditional walking days into two more enjoyable experiences. Follow quiet country paths through the Xallas region, with its forested hills, old stone architecture and deep rural calm. An unhurried afternoon offers space to rest and absorb the journey.
-
Accommodation: Negreira
Distance: ~12.9 miles / 20.7 km
Meals: Breakfast
Walk east through changing Galician landscapes of woodland, farmland and small hamlets. The route rolls gently toward Negreira, a historic Camino town centered around the medieval Pazo do Cotón. With Santiago drawing closer, the day carries a growing sense of anticipation and shared accomplishment.
-
Accommodation: Santiago
Distance: 13 miles / 20.9 km
Meals: Breakfast
The final stage leads across the River Tambre at beautiful Ponte Maceira, through leafy lanes and over the last hills toward Santiago. The cathedral towers gradually come into view before the unforgettable arrival in Praza do Obradoiro. Celebrate the journey together in the historic center before the guided tour concludes later that afternoon. Guests may depart or arrange an additional night in Santiago independently.
